Violence in the media
Violence in the media:
"Violence in the media has a negative effect on society"
- For - The internet, films and games all can effect peoples behaviour in society. One example of this is the James Bulger criminal case. This is when a 2 year old boy was kidnapped and brutally murdered with the committers of the crime only being 10 years old. In there court hearings they stated they were inspired by a violent video game that they had witnessed before the murder. The video game GTA is also highly criticised for its use of graphic and violent scenes. The age limit in this game is an 18 however this does not stop younger people from buying it as it can be bought online without needing an ID. Furthermore in America it is legal for people to purchase guns. These are often seen being used in films and video games and may inspire people to use them in real life. Gun crime is often heard of a lot in America and the cause of this is normally blamed on the media.
- Against - There are many other reasons behind why criminals commit offences. Media is often used as a scape goat and takes the blame for the reasons why people have committed crimes such as murder. However in most cases many criminals have psychological and mental issues which is the cause of there behaviour. The American film producer Quentin Taranitno strongly believes that the media does not have a connection or link with the actions of criminals. He believes that criminals actually have a much deeper problem that needs more awareness raised about it such as mental and psychological issues that they are born with or developed.
How should regulation and censorship be used?
In my opinion regulations on media such as video games and films are not affective. One example of this is such as at the cinema there are age restrictions on the movie which means if you are under age you can not get in. However if a young person really wants to watch the film then they can stream or download the film anyway without needing ID. Another example of this is if a child is underage they can not buy the video game from a shop but they can buy it online without being checked if they are old enough. Censorship on the other hand i think is a useful way to control what people view i the media. Such as in newspapers it is helpful to have control over what is published as people of a young age can see it in shops. However some people disagree with censorship as they believe it is not ethically fair if there is one person making decisions on what they can and can't view in the media. Furthermore censorship is not used online so many viewers can access many inappropriate websites that contains sensitive information no matter their age. This could lead people to believe that censorship should be tightened to stop younger viewers from accessing harmful websites online.
