Open and Closed Media text: This advert is an example of an open text media advertisement. The use of anchoring in the bottom left corner makes the advert portray one meaning which is that it is trying to persuade people to buy a fridge. However the main caption at the top of the page"the most stylish member of the family" makes the advert ambiguous. This is because it does not specify which item is the 'most stylish' either the fridge or the gnome. This allows the audience to decide there preferred meaning which is the most likely interpretation of the open text. This closed text advert has only one meaning in which that more people should join the navy. However if the advert did not have the caption at the top of the page the advert would be open text. This is because the image is of a submarine with army officers surrounding it with weapons. Violence in the media: "Violence in the media has a negative effect on society" For - The internet, films and games all can effect peoples behaviour in society. One example of this is the James Bulger criminal case. This is when a 2 year old boy was kidnapped and brutally murdered with the committers of the crime only being 10 years old. In there court hearings they stated they were inspired by a violent video game that they had witnessed before the murder. The video game GTA is also highly criticised for its use of graphic and violent scenes. The age limit in this game is an 18 however this does not stop younger people from buying it as it can be bought online without needing an ID. Furthermore in America it is legal for people to purchase guns. These are often seen being used in films and video games and may inspire people to use them in real life. Audience Responses research: This film poster is purposely meant to evoke an active response in the audience. Most peoples response to the film is that it is a scary horror film. Some of the factors that effect this response could be the age of the viewer. Typically the younger the viewer the more worried and nervous the audience member will be. The location that the audience are in could also affect there response to the film. If they are watching it alone inside there home it could have a bigger impact of that when they are watching it in a group in a public situation. The film 'the cabin in the woods' is a horror film that is meant to pull on peoples emotions. The gender of the viewer could affect the way they react to the film. For example males are suppose to be masculine and strong so when they are scared by the film they do not show there emotions due to the typical stereotype of them.
