Construction of representations

Construction of representations in news:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-41263147

In the BBC news article the author has constructed it by choosing certain language to represent how the fire unfolded during the early hours of the morning. In the article it uses the word 'trapped' which shows to the audience that the pupils of the school were engulfed by the fire and experienced panic and chaos before there death. The article also shares with the audience the age of the school children who are aged 13-17. The newspaper may have purposely constructed the article with the ages in it as it impacts the audience who may be shocked by the thought that the victims of the fire were only teenagers and may not have experienced life to the fullest before their death.

In the article, BBC have used images to represent the aftermath of the situation. One of the images shows the family of a victim looking devastated and upset. This represents to the audience that the fire has had a lasting impact on peoples lives after the event. Furthermore the article includes a short statement from the fire and rescue department in Malaysia. This represents to the audience that the quote is reliable and trustworthy as it was said by a person of importance and not someone that was local when the fire broke out.

The news article is the top story on the BBC news world homepage. This example of agenda setting and gatekeeping shows that the BBC consider this story to be the most newsworthy and it is important for the audience to be educated on disasters that are happening in other countries around the world. Some people may find this news not as important or as relevant as something that is happening in the uk as it doesn't affect there everyday lives. However the news report is about young students and teachers therefore it is relevant to most people reading the article as they will have experienced contact with teachers during there school years or have their own children so they can relate to the news article.
