Movie poster analysis

It:
The colours on the movie advertisement have different connotations which helps us as the audience understand what the film is based around and what it will entail. For example the black background could symbolise death and evil which leads us to believe the movie is a scary thriller. The colours red and yellow stand out on the black background. Red could have connotations of blood and aggressive behaviour which also could lead us to believe the film is based around the topic of death.
Another example of non-verbal communication is the body language of the human in the movie advertisement. From the image we jump to the conclusion that the person is a young child who is staring up towards a deep red balloon. The image looks eerie and the boy looks lonely so therefore as an audience we think the film relates to death and evil. On the deep red balloon there is also a reflection of a clown. Most clowns are normally humorous and funny, however this one looks like he is ready to attack.

Sherlock:
From the film advertisement we as the audience automatically jump to the conclusion that the film is based around well off English men as the image shows two middle aged men dressed in top hats and suits. The non verbal communication shows to us what the film could be based around. The main focus of the advert is the large image of the centre of the page. This picture could represent that the main characters of the film are detectives as they look like they are ready for a mission and they are re-adjusting their gloves. To follow on from this, the non verbal communication is also presented through the use of colour. The background colour also supports the fact that the two men could be detectives as it is white with grey fog clearing. White has connotations of pure and cleanliness which could show the men have just got rid of the grey which has connotations of evil and dark.

Comments

  1. Very good use of media terminology Aimee (connotation and so on). Good explanation of the use of colour.

Going forward, you might want to discuss these in terms of how typical they are of the genre you have chosen, for example the colours in the It poster are typical of horror in the main but the yellow is more of a challenge to those typical colours.

Good work and good understanding shown
