East enders analysis
lauren:
- In this scene from EastEnders Lauren is portrayed as an alcoholic who has a very aggressive temper. Within the first few seconds of the clip we automatically assume she has a problem with controlling her alcohol intake so the audience may stereotype her into a certain category. In modern media teenagers are often known to be trouble causers and are normally liable to drinking lots alcohol therefore Lauren's behaviour reinforces the stereotype and leads older generations to believe most teenagers act in this way . Towards the end of the clip Lauren punches Lucy which may be shocking to some viewers as it goes against the normal stereotype of women who are meant to be formal and are commonly known to be prim and proper. This shows Lauren's character challenges the normal stereotype that women are controlled and formal.
- Lucy on the other hand can be seen as a foil to Lauren as their apperence and personality are different. Lucy is presented as a formal character as she is dressed smart and looks like a typical stereotype of a women on first glance. However in the scene she the starts to goad Lauren and try's to get a reaction from her. This then make us question is she just as bad as Lauren. Therefore Lucy also challenges the normal stereotypes of women as she could be seen as agressive and outspoken whereas women in older generations should be well behaved and formal so it may shock older viewers. On the other hand teenagers are often stereotyped into being trouble causers so Lucy reinforces this as her behavior is unacceptable in a public place as she try to goad Lauren and wind her up.
Overall, eastenders in some ways is an accurate reflection of reality as in the east end of London it is presented as a part of the UK that struggles with aggressive people and people who watch media representations of it, see it as a negative place. Therefore it is an accurate reflection as the fight scene between Lauren and Lucy shows the impact of alcohol and aggressive behaviour which viewers expect based on where it is set. However, the media representation of behaviour in Eastenders could have started to mask and pervert reality. This is because if we experience life in the East end first hand it would be highly unlikely that we see alcoholics in pubs 24/7 and it is highly unlikely we would see women aggressively fighting in the streets. Therefor the media representation may be inaccurate.
Excellent detail Aimee with very clear understanding shown of the way that representations work and how stereotypes create meaning.
ReplyDeleteWWW- great detail of the representations and how they create meaning for the audience.
EBI- you had found some other, perhaps real representations from elsewhere in the media such as the news to illustrate these representations more widely.
Show me- reply to this post and give some real examples of these stereotypes being reinforced or challenged
In a newspaper article on the BBC website there is a story that supports the representation of Lauren. In Eastenders Lauren is seen as violent and aggressive. In the online article it shows a women who is being charged for murder. These representations of women challenge typical stereotypes as women were normally seen as formal and as housewives where as in the modern era they are aggressive and show there violent emotions.
