Stereotype film analysis

She's the man:
In the film 'She's the man' the main character challenges the typical stereotype of women as she plays football. In the film the woman, viola, pretends to be her twin brother in order to play on the football team as girls are not allowed on. This reinforces the typical stereotype that football is only for men and women should not be allowed to play. However throughout the film viola challenges this stereotype by perusing her career as a footballer whilst dressed up as a man. However, the other females in the film reinforce typical women's stereotypes as they are feminine and act like a women 'should'. Olivia and Monique represent the attitudes of most teenage girls at collage. They obsess over males, wear lots of makeup and dress in short skirts and tops to attract attention.
The use of mis-en-scene allows us to follow Violas double life. In the film the group of main characters and there paths all cross over allowing Violas real identity to be revealed after she has completed the important football match when she pretends to be her brother. The scene when the woman find out there football team has folded the use of lighting and weather reflects the mood of the scene. The use of pathetic fallacy shows that the woman in the film are upset and angry about the information and throughout the rest of the film the main character strives to change this.
The film 'she's the man' was made in 2006. At this time women's football had not progressed to the level and popularity that it is at now. The film therefore challenges major stereotypes that surround women as at this time it was not common in the uk for women to play football at professional levels. However in America ladies football is very common and now has possibly the best international women's football team in the world. Overall the films allows us to see some of the struggles for women who have to majorly challenge the typical stereotypes in order to live there dreams and fulfil there ambitions.
