Open and closed media text

Open and Closed Media text:

This advert is an example of an open text media advertisement. The use of anchoring in the bottom left corner makes the advert portray one meaning which is that it is trying to persuade people to buy a fridge. However the main caption at the top of the page"the most stylish member of the family" makes the advert ambiguous. This is because it does not specify which item is the 'most stylish' either the fridge or the gnome. This allows the audience to decide there preferred meaning which is the most likely interpretation of the open text.

This closed text advert has only one meaning in which that more people should join the navy. However if the advert did not have the caption at the top of the page the advert would be open text. This is because the image is of a submarine with army officers surrounding it with weapons. The image is therefore open for the audience to interpret their own meaning and decide what they think the message of the image is.

This is an example of an open text advert. It allows the reader to interpret the image and caption it in their own way. Even though the text "stop dreaming start working" is a command it does not specify what they are working for or the brand that they are adverting. This means that the audience can therefore make their own preferred interpretation which is personal and is relating to their own targets and achievements. The background image of the clouds also allows the audience to decide what the meaning of the advert is. This is because the sky has many symbolic meanings and the viewer can then decide on their own preferred reading.
