Game of Thrones analysis

1.) Explain how the clip has used sound to create meaning.
- The clip has used non diegetic sound to create meaning in the clip. The extract from Game of Thrones shows a large and powerful army take down a large ice wall in order to progress past it. The music on that is over the top of the scene creates a sense of tension for the audience as it slowly builds up and intensifies the scene. The ambient sounds in the clip are of the army marching through the snow and ice to progress past the first line of defence. There is also a fictional dragon used by the army which makes roaring and screeching noises in the background of the clip. The diegetic sound in the clip creates a sense of urgency and panic as the characters stood on top of the ice wall are about to be attacked so they scream for help and to let others know what is happening.

2.) Consider how the sound adds to the verisimilitude of the scene and creates the illusion of reality.
- Throughout the clip the sound of the crumbling and crashing of the ice/mountain adds to the verisimilitude as the sounds are realistic and represent what we would hear as the audience if we were witnessing the crashing of a mountain. Furthermore the characters stood on the top of the ice mountain scream in fear. This adds to the verisimilitude as we as the audience see the emotion and panic of the characters when they are attacked.

3.) What camera angles have been used in key points of the clip and why?
- Establishing shot: At the beginning of the clip there is an extreme long shot which sets  the scene as it shows the large army emerging from the woods in order to progress through the first line of defence. The camera angle is from above so it could show that the army below are inferior and not likely to pass the ice wall.
- Medium close up: We next see a close up of two characters at the top of the ice wall looking panicked and with a sense of urgency as they are about to be invaded. The close up shot allows us to see the emotion on their face which in this case is worry and panic.
- Movement shot: One of the next shots is of the fictional dragon attacking the ice wall and the characters at the top of it. The dragon then flies past the wall he has defeated leading the way for the rest of the army. The audience then see a low angle shot of it flying above. This could show that the dragon has the power and it is preparing for the next battle.
- Extreme long shot: Throughout the extract there are numerous clips of the 'army of the dead' marching towards the ice wall. The extreme long shot allows the audience to see the large amounts of soldiers and the large amount of surface area they cover.

4.) How is time and space communicated through the editing?
- Time is shown in the clip as when it has been editing the different scenes cut from one to the other. This shows that the battle is continuos as the clip rolls from event to event showing the battle happens relatively quickly and it shows all of the events unfolding. Space is communicated through the editing in the clip as different camera angle are used. Throughout the clip a very extreme long shot is used which shows the large amount of soldiers in the 'army of the dead'. The long camera angle allows us to see the mass amount of land the soldiers spread across.

5.) How is the genre of the clip shown? Is the genre followed or challenged in any way?
- The genre of game of thrones is medieval fantasy and drama. One way this is shown in the clip is through the costumes worn by the army. The 'army of the dead' wear metal armour and hold spears. This shows the series is set in medieval times are there is no modern technology being used. Another aspect of the clip that shows the series is a fantasy is the use of mystical creatures. The dragon and horse like creatures show this genre as they are not real in the modern world.
