Bullet Boy:
How are people and places represented in the film Bullet Boy?
- In the film 'Bullet Boy', youth are represented as criminals and are supposedly all involved in gang violence and gun crime. Mostly all of the male teenagers in the film are involved in the violence and the film follows the story of how youths get wrapped up in crime and take the wrong path in life. The film is based around black people and therefore creates a negative stereotype around their ethnicity as mostly all of the characters are criminals apart from two parents. The film is set in inner city London which is portrayed to be run down and rough. This makes us as the audience in some ways sympathetic for the teenage criminals as they have no other legal way of making money or solving their problems.
Which stereotypes that exist about people and places are challenged and which are reinforced?
- In todays media many of the stereotypes that surround black people are negative. Although this is not true in every case, the media repeatedly portray them to be criminals so the stereotype is intensified and surrounds them. This negative stereotype is reinforced in the film as the main character 'Ricky' has just been released from prison and a week after his release he is already wrapped up in criminal activities and is in possession of a murder weapon. This reinforces the negative stereotype of the ethnic minority group as it shows them being apart of a criminal world. On the other hand a stereotype that is challenged is that of women. Traditionally women are seen as inferior and not able to be strong and powerful. This stereotype is challenged in the film 'Bullet Boy' as the mother of the criminal is strong willed and stands up to her son by removing him from their flat in order to give her younger son a good chance in life to be successful.
