Media Regulations

Media regulations:

1.) Why is regulation of the media important? Give examples of what might happen without regulations.
- Regulation in the media is very important as it controls what the press are allowed to say about its subject. Without regulations the media would be allowed to comment about any situation or event freely. This therefore would cause tension and unrest around the public as the media may have a biased opinion. An example of this is if a online website contained sensitive information/ content. This would cause multiple issues as online the public can access a wide range of sources and if they went on the wrong website they could be open to viewing sensitive content.

2.) How was newspaper regulation ad shown in the docudrama "The lost honour of Christopher Jeffries" ineffective?
- In the docudrama "The Lost Honour Of Christopher Jeffries" the newspapers were able to publish biased and unreliable stories in their publications. At this time the newspaper regulations were very ineffective as they did not have solid evidence to prove he was guilty of murder however they still published stories about his 'personality' and 'traits'. When Jeffries was released from custody his reputation had been branded as evil and sinister. However this wasn't the case. This led to him being judged by the British public for someone who he wasn't. Therefore the press regulations was very ineffective as they were able to publish views and opinions that were not true and could have ruined his life after the crime.

3.) 'The Press, whilst free to be partisan, must distinguish clearly comment, conjecture and fact.'
Explain what this means and why you think it is included in the code:
- I think it is important this is included in the code as it ensures that the opinion and bias of the newspaper should not be blurred between the facts. This means that in cases such as Christopher Jeffries he may have not been treated as unjust as he was. Without these regulations the press would be allowed to publish anything they want no matter of its bias. Therefore it is important this included in the code as it shows which information is true and is fact and distinguishes what is opinion.

4.) Explain why it is important for the press in particular to have a code of practice.
- I think it is important for the press in particular to have a code of practice as the front cover of the newspapers are spread in shops daily. Therefore it is very easy for the public to view the bias content and opinions during there everyday life. Without these codes of practice it is very easy to spread false allegations and manipulate the public into believing information that is not reliable.
