Logistics- Regulations : Coursework

Regulation

1.) Outline the regulatory body for your chosen medium and explain how they regulate their products:
- The Independent Press Standards Organisation Regulates what can be published in newspapers and magazines and determines whether it is suitable for the public to view. The Editors' Codes of Practice sets out the rules that the publications regulated by IPSO have agreed to follow.
- The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) is the independent regulator for the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK. We hold newspapers and magazines to account for their actions, protect individual rights, uphold high standards of journalism and help to maintain freedom of expression for the press.

- IPSO's Code:

It is the responsibility of editors and publishers to apply the Code to editorial material in both printed and online versions of their publications. They should take care to ensure it is observed rigorously by all editorial staff and external contributors, including non-journalists.

Editors must maintain in-house procedures to resolve complaints swiftly and, where required to do so, co- operate with IPSO. A publication subject to an adverse adjudication must publish it in full and with due prominence, as required by IPSO.

-There are 16 key areas which all are explained on the IPSO website. These highlight the areas of information which should not be reported on in magazines or newspapers. Some of these are; Accuracy, Privacy, Harassment, Reporting suicide, Children, Hospitals and more. All of these headings have rules explained underneath them in order to guide the magazines of what they can and can not include in their magazine.
- For example under the Accuracy heading the bullet points explain that the press must take care not to publish inaccurate, misleading or distorted information or images. The press should promptly correct the misleading statement or distortion and may where appropriate publish an apology.  And finally the press even though they are free to campaign and editorialise they must distinguish clearly between comment, conjecture and fact.

2.) Explain the dual function of the organisation. (complaints):
- IPSO is a dual functioning company. As well as setting the codes of practice that magazines have to follow they also take complaints and discipline the companies if they do not follow the regulations. Members of the public that are not satisfied with the information published in magazines or newspapers can  complete an online complaints form or send in writing their complaint.
- Anyone can make a complaint to IPSO, however there is a four month time limit after the media product is published in which they can report their opinion.

- What can the public complain about?
  • articles
  • images (including video)
  • audio material on newspaper and magazine websites
  • readers' letters
  • edited or moderated reader comments on newspaper and magazine websites.
You can also complain about the behaviour of journalists including:
  • refusing requests to stop taking photographs or asking questions
  • using hidden cameras or recording devices to obtain material
  • failing to be sensitive when dealing with cases involving grief and shock
  • failing to obtain the proper consent before speaking to children or individuals in hospital or similar institutions.
